The Science of Sign Language & Deaf: Educational Interpreting for Students with DUAL-disabilities on 1/10/17

The Science of Sign Language
10am – 12pm
Jennifer Kuyrkendall will highlight published scientific research on the human brain and sign language usage. Participants will be introduced to the cognitive impact on visual spatial language anomalies, and identify the complex parts of the brain that relate to language comprehension and expression.
Deaf: Educational Interpreting for Students with DUAL-disabilities
1:30pm – 3:30pm
Marlana Kienlen will focus on several dual-disabilities, deaf plus another disability, and participants will discuss as a group how to access information and why it is important for interpreters to be aware of additional disabilities that the students they work with may have.

Dr. Barbara Lovas will lead in an online interactive 8 week study, focusing on church interpreting techniques and ethics: Emphasis will be placed on religious vocabulary, terminology, ethics, and Deaf empowerment as it relates to church settings and interpreting scripture and religious music. Local Deaf will also share their feelings related to ethics and Deaf empowerment. This course will include 45mins to an 1 hour of live interactive instruction w/ a minimum of 2 additional hours of work per week; along with hands-on practices, techniques, resources, and study aids provided to participants. Scholarships are offered. .6 CEUs will be provided.

"Poetry in Motion"

Cost: $10 Interpreters often have a hard time interpreting poetry and songs. Different techniques and skills will be discussed and put into practice during this hands-on interactive workshop.

Proper use of classifiers, handshapes, non-manuals and rhythm will be covered; with a main focus on properly interpreting the artistic feel of the poetry or song while maintaining the integrity of the poetry or song’s message.

Participants are encouraged to bring a printed copy (double spaced) of their favorite song or poem.

We will learn commonly used signs for various states, cities, famous/infamous people, places, businesses, holidays, countries, and several international proper nouns via helpful memorization tools and interactive games.
