Washing My Hair with Kefir and Kombucha
Some of you have asked me
to start posting some of my older articles about kefir and kombucha. I
will start posting some of them here to make them easier to find. Of
course, if you want more to read before I post them, you can Google them
by using my name and the subject matter. Here is the most requested
article first (NOTE: Now at age 55, my hair is more blonde and healthier
than when I wrote this in 2008):

When I noticed that my hair was going back to my original color I was a bit embarrassed to tell anyone what I had noticed; because I was sure that people would think I was imagining things, so I said nothing. Ironically, within a day or so of my noticing this, someone in my kombucha group had noticed the same thing. Their experience was more evident than mine, because that person and their spouse's hair had changed from grey back to brown. I replied and shared my experience and so did others. So, I am not the only 'crazy' that says my hair has gone back to it's original color. Since that time, which has been at least a year ago now. Several people have commented on my hair. The ones who knew that my hair had been thin my whole life ... and that my hair had become dry, brittle and dull as I had become older have been even more shocked.
So, now are you wondering what I do to wash my hair? First of all, I haven't been able to go totally soapless on the hair yet. Though, I use so very little shampoo, that one large bottle of shampoo with essential oils lasts me forever ... I mean, FOREVER! I tried the "no poo" method with Baking Soda and Apple Cider Vinegar. It was too drying for my hair. Though, I must mention that it does work very well for others.
Here is what I do: I soak my hair in the kombucha at least once a week. I also soak my hair in kefir at least once a week. When my hair needs washing between those times I use a pinch a good quality herbal shampoo with essential oils ONLY on my roots. As I rinse the shampoo out (rinsing it out very well!) the shampoo water runs down the remainder of my hair, though I don't intentionally 'wash' the rest of my hair or ends.
I used to pretty much just take a handful of shampoo and slap it on my wet hair/head and sort of scrub my hair around until it looked like a nest (which is the common practice of most), then rinse it out; followed by conditioner. My poor hair certainly needed the conditioner after that horrible abuse!
I no longer use conditioners or hair sprays. Thankfully, I don't need them anymore. Being that my hair used to be so thin, it used to quickly become oily. This is no longer the case. Now, I use a little bit of pure coconut oil in my hair after washing. It works great! Every once in a while I mix up some coconut oil and lanolin and use it on the tips of my hair.
Let me warn you! If you wash your hair too often in kombucha, your head will smell like vinegar when you sweat. That happened to me once. Not good! Which also reminds me, if you are a person who likes your hair to smell good you can do what I do. When you add the coconut oil to your hair add a drop of geranium oil, or any other essential oil that is safe for your skin. Your hair will smell great and look shiny. It also holds up well to humidity. I live in New Orleans, the capital of humidity, and my hair holds up great.

This study group meets on Monday nights at 6:45 pm and is for all ages: hearing, deaf, deaf/blind, students, friends and family members of the Deaf, professionals serving the Deaf and those who want to learn sign language:

Another last minute
water kefir workshop because my kefir is growing so fast that I need to give
some away!!!
Those who attend will be given some grains and instruction on how to make water kefir. I will include a recipe and resources. Please bring to the workshop a regular canning jar (pint or quart). I will provide you with all the instructions, ingredients and the recipe needed to make your first batch. So, you will go home prepared to make your first batch. As always, I don't sell my grains or scobies, but will give them away.
Those who attend will be given some grains and instruction on how to make water kefir. I will include a recipe and resources. Please bring to the workshop a regular canning jar (pint or quart). I will provide you with all the instructions, ingredients and the recipe needed to make your first batch. So, you will go home prepared to make your first batch. As always, I don't sell my grains or scobies, but will give them away.
We will go over general guidelines
to eating healthy. Topics will include homegrown probiotics, fermented foods,
and our body's need for fatty acids. We will also discuss how to
make healthy tasty alternatives to replace foods that we need to
eliminate from our diets. Of course, you can expect me to fuss a
bit about white table salt (poison) and artificial sweeteners (poison) ... but
I will give you healthy alternatives! In fact, I will give you an
opportunity to taste them.
NOTE: As lagniappe we will have
choice of at least 10 amazing teas and kombucha to drink during the workshop,
and we will talk about and taste a recipe made with coconut oil. If you
want milk kefir, water kefir or a kombucha scoby, remember those are available
according to my supply. That being said; If you ask in advance, I should have
some milk kefir grains and maybe some kombucha ready to give away on the day of
the workshop. As I always give away kefir and kombucha for free. If you
need an interpreter, please request an interpreter immediately: specify the
language needed.
Don't worry, if you accidentally
kill the kefir I have given you, I will always be glad to give you more.

MONDAY NIGHT FREE ASL CLASSES UPDATE
Hello All!!!
Here is an update of our Monday Night ASL Class Schedule:
All ASL Monday Classes
Mondays, 6:45pm

NOLA, 70124 (enter the side door, downstairs, facing Hawthorne Place)
SUMMER INSTRUCTORS:
Beginners ASL -- Mary Hoang
Intermediate ASL -- Jennie Jones
Advanced ASL -- Elizabeth Cazabat
Adjunct ASL Instructor -- Eddie Hugger
CLASS DETAILS:
ASL Class On-site Point of Contact and Monitor -- Joshua Cazabat
All classes meet and end at the same. Instructors are all Deaf or hard of hearing (with exception of the advanced group). Joshua Cazabat will be the on-site POC and will help assigning voicers to the each class or group per the instructor's requests. He will also be the go to person for any on-site questions, concerns, or problems. Please make sure that you give your contact info to your instructor so that you can be informed of any changes, information, or projects related to your specific class.
UPCOMING EVENTS FOR ALL:
"Study in the Park" -- Bring your brown paper bag lunch and something to keep you hydrated throughout the day and meet your class and instrutors at the Deaf Church. then get on the streetcar and transfer to the following appropriate streetcars (and perhaps one bus because the streetcar may be down in one area). The classes will meet, study and share lunch at Audubon Park and ride the streetcar back to the Deaf Church. NOTE: It was suggested by the Transit Authority that you look into purchasing an all day pass for your convenience and to save money instead of paying for each transfer. July 11, 2015
"Deaf Deaf World" -- Total Immersion Deaf World Experience: Come join us for a day of fun and "frustration." Experience what it would feel like to be dropped off in a Deaf World, where the required mode of communicatation for all businesses transactions from going to the local store to your court will be ASL. There will be lots of fun and a certificate of completion to be awarded to all those who participate. Sept 19, 2015
PRIVATE TUTORING: Private tutoring can always be set up and paid directly to your instructors for a reasonable fee. All private tutor sessions are held in a public place mutually agreed to by you and your instructor.
OTHER: If you have any questions concerning the program or need help setting personal goals to become fluent in ASL, need to earn CEUs for your profession, need community service hours related to Deaf service hours, want to join the internship program to become a certified ASL interpreter, need a proctor for EIPA Written for educational interpreters and interpreters in the Louisiana Public Schools please contact me directly.
